Spiegel Grove submerges as scuttling plan fails near Key Largo
A 510 foot Navy ship intended to be sunk as an artificial reef sank unexpectedly in 160 feet of water six miles off the Florida Keys. Workers evacuated safely by tugboat after last minute preparations failed. The Spiegel Grove, retired by the Navy in 1989, was to be sunk for divers but ended upside down with its bow protruding.
