ABC Plans Own Communications Satellite to Feed Affiliates
New York ABC president Leonard Goldenson announced plans to seek permission to build and operate a communications satellite for feeding programs to affiliated stations. If feasible, one channel would be made free to National Educational Television. White of NET called the offer revolutionary for educational TV and NET's service to 92 stations. ABC filed with the FCC to use the Early Bird satellite and pursue domestic frequencies. A separate FCC panel discussed the potential creation of a fourth national network, noting revenue and programming could support such an operation, though challenges remain.
