Kennedy Uses Estes Case To Back Farm Plan
President Kennedy argues for a supply management farm program in Congress by recalling Billie Estes cases and rising farm surpluses. He cites Estes fraud indictments and FBI probes, saying old programs fed excess storage costs and heavy taxpayer burdens. He warns surpluses could rise to 10 14 billion if old polices return, and the plan would tighten controls to balance production with needs. Senator Aiken counters that costs could be trimmed with alternative approaches and questions the administration’s aims to control farming and food for political reasons.
