Mary Kay Bading, 5, of 1554 Fourth Avenue SE, suffered minor abrasions and a possible fracture of the right wrist after running into the street in front of 1561 Bever Avenue SE at about 7 p.m. Wednesday. Driver John Davis of Norway swerved to avoid the child and hit a parked machine. he told police she ran out from behind a car as if him coming from the opposite direction was Lawrence Schoonover, 1561 Bever Avenue. The child was taken to a hospital for X-rays.
The senate agriculture committee on Thursday approved unanimously Harold K. Hill of Wisconsin as a director of the Commodity Credit Corporation.
Winds lash Red River as flood walls strain under near gale, 17 percent of Winnipeg under water and 105000 forced to flee. Breaches are patched with sandbags while rain and a 30.2 foot crest test the city. Federal Judge Philip L. Sullivan announced he will shift evidentiary hearings to Special Master A. MacDonald in the government’s 1948 antitrust suit against Armour Cudahy Swift and Wilson. He noted the record contains 4000 meat items 97 plants and 666 branch offices and warned the case will span many months.
United Nations Secretary General Trygve Lie says Prime Minister Stalin is hale and hearty after meeting for an hour and a half. Lie dismissed rumors about Stalin's health as lies and false, stating he was as healthy and lively as in 1946.
Mayor Clarence L. Sedive on Thursday urged citizens to sign their names to letters to the city council or mayor. He cited an anonymous note about neighborhood dog nuisance in Cedar Rapids as an example and said no action will be taken without a signed complaint.
The Fourth degree Knights of Columbus Bowen assembly in Kansas City will host a dinner meeting Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the K C hall. A report on the state convention in Dubuque May 20 and 21 will be presented. Members should reserve by calling 8195 by Saturday.
Ralph Lindsey 28 Marion waived a preliminary hearing on rape charges and was bound over to the district court under $20 000 bail. He is accused of raping a ten year old Hopkinton girl early last Sunday and September is the next term for jury service.
Linn County Treasurer Frank Bates announced that $61 286.04 from the state will be refunded to farmers in districts with more than 15 mills in general school levies. Refunds cover 1949 taxes payable in 1950, with 100 percent distribution planned by July 1. The state funded varying amounts in 1946 to 1948 due to limits, while 1949 refunds were fully funded.
George W. Frasier 35 of 820 B avenue NE waived to the grand jury on cheating by false pretenses. Held on 1000 bond in Linn county jail. Accused of illegally obtaining 60 dollars in soldier's relief benefits between December 20, 1949 and April 6. Frasier claimed a wife and two children to support. investigation showed his wife died three years ago and no children. Arrested late Wednesday by Deputy Sheriff Pete Whittemore.
Kenneth Delano thirty of Pentwater Michigan pled guilty to embezzlement by a bailee and was sentenced to an indeterminate five years in Fort Madison penitentiary by Judge Floyd Philbrick. He allegedly took a used car from Wathan Motor Company on September 10 and was later arrested in Texas and brought back to Cedar Rapids. He had pleaded innocent on April 21 but changed his plea Thursday.
Bert Parrack a 45 year old from Harvard Illinois waived to the grand jury in justice court on a charge of uttering a forged instrument and was ordered held in Linn county jail in lieu of 2000 dollar bond. He is accused of passing a worthless twenty dollar check May 16 on Tom A Thomas. He was arrested by Cedar Rapids police Tuesday.
Kenneth Fleming 26 of route 3 was arrested Wednesday afternoon by Deputy Sheriff Pete Whitte on a warrant from Buchanan county authorities for uttering a forged check. He remained in custody with the Buchanan county sheriff's office Thursday.
J Ruffman filed suit Wednesday against Marvin R Karbier and Frank Zobac for 250 dollars alleged overdue rent on property at 39 Sixteenth Avenue SW.
Tenant Tiff alleges defendants failed to pay $125 monthly rent for April and May and seeks court order for rent owed during the allegedly contracted five year lease period. The filing requests judgment for arrears and related court costs.
Five suits were dismissed in district court on motions by plaintiffs Wednesday and Thursday. Cases include Business Opportunities Inc versus D C Frasier, Jacob Bender Inc versus Edwin C Nelson, Laurance Press Company versus John T Oberg, Helen Marie Glessner versus Virgil R Glessner for divorce, and Theresia A Phelps versus Roland H Phelps for divorce. Phelps dismissed a cross petition in her suit.
Parks Air Line told the Civil Aeronautics Board it could begin flying on a reasonable scale in three to four weeks. The Iowa based carrier has not flown its routes but has bought planes and is negotiating for more as it fights to keep 3100 miles of Midwest feeder routes.
Robert Caldwell executive vice president and Roy Swanson assistant secretary of the Chamber of Commerce will attend the Iowa Commercial Organization Executives annual convention in Des Moines Sunday and Monday. Caldwell will speak on The Value of Membership Meetings.
A ten cent an hour general increase was granted to Castone Products Company workers. Harry Wilford of the Teamsters union announced Thursday. The raise is retroactive to May 1, lifting the minimum wage to $1.10 per hour and affecting about 15 employees.
DES MOINES Board of Control Chairman Henry Burma said the Anamosa reformatory investigation found no evidence of a secret radio transmitter. He noted the check followed Cedar Rapids claims of a life term prisoner transmitter and parole board interview tapes. A weak signal generator was deemed incapable of broadcasting beyond the walls.

Mrs Theophilus Thomas 82 of 805 Fifth Avenue SE died at 9 20 a m Thursday. Born near Cedar Rapids she married Theophilus Thomas Nov 20 1890 Fairfax township. Survived by daughter Mrs Jay W Hesser and son Glenn H Thomas both of Cedar Rapids five grandchildren. Burial Linwood Cemetery. services 2 p m Saturday at Barta Hesser chapel.
Gary Paul Usher five day old son of Mr and Mrs Richard Usher of 3400 Johnson avenue NW died in a Cedar Rapids hospital Wednesday. Survived by his parents are his grandparents Mr and Mrs A J Chapman and Mrs Edith Usher all of Cedar Rapids. Services held in Teahen chapel at 10 a m Thursday by Rt Rev Msgr D J Lenihan. Burial in Linwood cemetery.
Emmet C. Dean of 115 Fourteenth Street NW died at home Thursday after a lingering illness. Born July 4, 1870 in New York, he lived in Cedar Rapids 49 years and worked at Western Union for 60 years before retirement. He was a member of the Elks and Trinity Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Leota. Friends may call at Rohn chapel Friday evening. funeral arrangements pending.
Mrs. Charles B. Kadera died at 1:50 a.m. Thursday at her son Charles J. Kadera’s home 1221 Fourth Street SW after a lingering illness. Born March 19 1887 near Fairfax she lived in Walford 38 years and moved to Cedar Rapids two months ago. She was a Holy Trinity church member in Walford. Survived by her husband and son are a daughter Lenora Kimball in Walker a brother Ben Ludvicek of Cedar Rapids and five sisters Blanch Jindrich Conroy Mary Dusil Swisher Frances ...

Deputy county treasurer Dave Day says 30 000 registered passenger cars in Linn County will be reached by June 7. With 29 854 passenger cars and 5 272 commercial vehicles already registered, total county registrations stand at 35 156. The 29 985 passenger plates on November 30 marked last year’s high, and that is expected to be surpassed this summer.
Sixty one Red Cross members attended the annual board dinner at the Roosevelt hotel. Chapter Chairman Franklin Kemp opened with a summary of last year's activities. Dr Walter Block spoke on Medical Aspects of Atomic Warfare and Red Cross duties for atomic victims. Robert J. Wardenburg, son of Mr and Mrs Fred L Wardenburg of Williamsburg, will serve a three year term in the regular army. He has been sent to Fort Riley Kansas for training, the Cedar Rapids army and air force recruiting station announced Wednesday.
Six witnesses testified by Thursday morning in the NLRB hearing on a charge against Wilson and Company. Five testified earlier for the government, and Thelma Erger joined on Thursday. The Cedar Rapids plant workers, during the 1948 three month strike, claimed company pressure to drop the union and strike, amid allegations the firm refused to bargain with the workers union. Trial Examiner Earl S. Bellman presided amid frequent objections and heated exchanges between sides.
Senator B. B. Hickenlooper will not address the Independence bond rally in Anamosa to vote in Washington on FEPC cloture. Democratic contender Otha Wearin will speak as scheduled. The event marks the 1950 bond drive with a Liberty Bell replica arriving at 11 a.m. and regional bands welcoming attendees. Mayors of Jones County attend and all county schools will close for students to participate.
Alice Lindabury a 22 year old Vassar college senior who vanished in New York City 12 days ago was located there Wednesday in a state of mental confusion. She was taken to her parents home in Princeton New Jersey where her father an associate editor at Crowell Collier publications described her condition as nervous exhaustion and mental confusion.
