The Real Irish Republican Army is labeled a terrorist organization under U S law. The designation allows visa denial, bans fundraising in the United States, and freezes American bank holdings for the group and its leaders. Spokesman Richard Boucher cites a 1998 onward campaign of terrorism in Northern Ireland and Britain. Over 20 suspected members have been jailed, including alleged commander Michael Mickey McKevitt, held on terrorism charges after arrest in Ireland March 29.
