Pope John Paul II shot during general audience
Pope John Paul II was shot in St Peter's Square as he arrived for a general audience. The pope was wounded in the intestines but doctors said no vital organs were hit and he underwent two operations in a Rome hospital where he was reported recovering satisfactorily. Two American women were also wounded in the attack. Mehmet Ali Agca, a 23 year old Turk, was charged with the shooting and authorities believed accomplices may be involved while assessing possible motives.
