U S Planes Aid Cambodian Convoy Under Fire Near Phnom Penh
U S air forces including F 111 bombers F 4 Phantoms and A 7 Corsair jets attacked near the Mekong as a fuel convoy of eight ships faced heavy small arms fire about 22 miles southeast of Phnom Penh. Four FAC pilots reported one tanker on fire from 51 caliber rounds while two Spectres were ordered to assist. Shipping indicated the vessels would reach Phnom Penh after dark. In Saigon a U S military team sought access to Hanoi graves of 23 Americans who died as POWs with 20 graves moved outside the capital. ICCS readiness to begin an investigation into U S air raids near Loc Ninh was noted as Viet Cong urged safety guarantees for helicopters.
