Bill targets grain exporters must report foreign sales
Rep. Neal Smith introduces a measure to require grain exporters to notify the Agriculture Department within 48 hours of overseas sales. He cites the 197? Soviet wheat dealings where secrecy allegedly harmed farmers and boosts futures buying by exporters. The bill would amend the Commodity Exchange Act to bar purchases of futures without disclosure and would publicize the data on the next business day.

Inheritance Tax Threatens Farmers
Washington officials say a study by W. Fred Woods shows rising farm asset values push death taxes to threaten farm continuity. New Law Aims to End Tuberculosis in Hogs in Iowa
Iowa lawmakers passed a law giving the state veterinarian authority to trace brucellosis infected hogs to their origin and to pay indemnities for destroyed animals. Packed hog condemnations rise with tighter plant inspections, while leaders hope eradication will make Iowa first major hog state tuberculosis free. California already bars non certified brucellosis free hogs. John Sperholtz and Paul Bernhard advocate the program as a path to a safer, better pork product and reduced costs for producers and packers.
