Columbus AP report: Coroner John B Gravis ruled Edward Wegener died by justifiable death by own action after he plunged nine stories to his death in a downtown building’s inner court. Investigators noted Wegener’s son died at Pearl Harbor his daughter an army nurse died in Europe and his wife died six months earlier. Wegener, a hospital janitor, lived alone with no known survivors.
Spokane AP reports toddler Jimmy Campbell, 2, died when he ran back into a burning house to rescue a toy. His mother Mrs Maxine Campbell, 23, and a two month old baby were evacuated as flames consumed the residence. The child’s body was recovered on a sofa amid the blaze.
Charles Spicer, 40, of 717 Second Street, was treated at Mercy Hospital Saturday morning after a fracas at Lum’s Tavern Friday night. He had a head gash needing eight stitches and alleged to have been struck with brass knuckles in the restroom. Police noted broken glass on his shoulders and found a bloodstained glass in the tavern. X rays will determine his condition.
A Linn county chapter of the Order of the Purple Heart elected nine officers Friday night at the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Nick Habib was named commander and 27 members attended. meetings are held the third Friday each month. Officers: Habib commander, Cornelius Wohl senior vice commander, Low Death junior vice commander, Robert Mahan finance officer, Earl Bender chaplain, Ken Moon judge advocate, William E. McBain adjutant, Glen McLain sergeant at arms, John Nemec historian. All except Wohl are Cedar Rapids men. Wohl is a Palo resident.
Ralph Johnson Jr of 1334 Twentieth Avenue SW was fined 100 dollars plus costs in traffic court after pleading guilty to reckless driving. Police observed an erratic drive on Mt Vernon Road SE and near Twenty‑First Street, with swerving and near-curbing before the car left Memorial Drive. He, a 27 year old, was placed under arrest.

The Most Rev Michael J Curley aged 67 archbishop of Baltimore and Washington died Friday night from a cerebral hemorrhage He was the only Catholic prelate to head two archdioceses and held seniority among all U S archbishops as Baltimore is the premier Catholic see.

El Kahir Shrine in Iowa inducted a spring class of 144 candidates from 34 communities in eastern and north central Iowa. The event, largest since 1944, included a street parade, musical units, and a banquet with over 1,800 Shriners in attendance. Notables from Abu-Bekr temple in Sioux City greeted officers and the program concluded with ritual work and a stage show led by James H. Smith.
Herbert Twite a 19 year old son of Dorchester residents was drowned when a tractor he was driving overturned in Bear creek on Ralph Hammell farm Hanover township 22 miles northwest of Waukon His body was recovered after about three hours He is survived by his parents a brother and a sister
Vernon Lustik discovered a steel filing cabinet in his back yard at 1014 Tenth Street NW containing drawings and blueprints for the Iowa Manufacturing Company. Police traced the items to a scrap dump from two months earlier and began investigating how they ended up there, suspecting youthful engineers involvement.

Police hunt three hit-and-run drivers after three pedestrians were struck in Des Moines within 24 hours. Victims include 21 year old Frank Turkal bruised and cut, 52 year old Wilbern Caudill killed, and 8 year old Roger West critically injured with a skull fracture while returning home from school. Richard Phillips aged 35 of St. Louis was sentenced to five years in the state penitentiary at Fort Madison after pleading guilty to embezzlement by bailee. He allegedly took a car owned by Louiseane of Cedar Rapids on May 2, drove it to St. Louis and sold it, was arrested May 11, and brought back to Cedar Rapids by Deputy Sheriff Harlan Snyder.
Kimm pled guilty to contempt of court before Judge G K Thompson on Saturday and was sentenced to 30 days in Linn county jail. The sentence was suspended. He faced contempt charges from his former wife Marjorie Kimm over missed child support for their four minors, tied to a December 27 1946 court order. The couple divorced October 29 1945. Kimm previously served nine months in Fort Madison penitentiary in 1946 after pleading guilty to failing to keep up alimony payments.
George M. Martin, 27, of 2696 Fruitland Drive SW, was fined 300 dollars plus costs by Judge G. K. Thompson after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. He was released on a 750 dollar bond following arrestThursday night near Sixth Street and Sixteenth Avenue SW during a car race incident.
Donald W. Kimball and Mrs. Victor Kleppe of 4220 Mt. Vernon road SE pled not guilty to lewdness before Judge G. K. Thompson in district court. Bond set at $1,500 each. Deputies Pete Whittemore and Bob Spooner arrested them early Friday.

A Italian schooner was sunk by a mine between Sardinia and Genoa on Saturday with the loss of all hands. One body was recovered and seven crew members were missing, in a report from Rome via AP.
At about 1 a.m. Saturday a car carrying Earlville high school principal Miss Mandiston and five seniors veered off a road eight miles west of Cedar Rapids. Alvin Rolling, driving, lost control in heavy rain and the car struck a ditch. Passengers included Jean Sachs Grace La Lois Wood and Ardis Scovel. They were treated at St. Luke's Hospital for minor abrasions.
Michael Elroy Stahle, 44, of 944 Twenty first Avenue SW, was ordered to plead by 10 a.m. Wednesday to a charge of operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. Bond was set at 1000 by Judge Floyd Philbrick after police observed his car driven erratically on Sixteenth Avenue SW. Stahle admitted drinking beer before arrest. this is his second drunken driving offense.
Two cars sideswiped on highway 150 two miles south of Walker Saturday morning. Edwin and Mrs. Smith of Postville, driving north, lost control after hitting a broken pavement and veered into Carl Sauer’s car from Rowley en route to Cedar Rapids. Sauer and passengers escaped with only minor bumps.
Ellis J. Levitt of Des Moines was elected president of the Iowa Association of Small Loan Companies as the organization ended a two day conference here Friday. Other officers are W. H. Mike Betenia of 526 H street SW paid a $100 fine and costs in police court Saturday after pleading guilty to drunkenness and disturbing the peace. He was arrested Friday night on his wife's information who said he had been drunk for three weeks and abusing her. He is detained awaiting an inebriety hearing in Linn County Court.

Detectives searched Friday night after a 15-year-old reported a man about 17 grabbed her on Seventh Street SE near Seventh Avenue, tearing clothing and pushing her to the ground as she crossed the street. Neighbors heard screams and aided briefly before the assailant fled. Local authorities opened an assault inquiry and urged nearby residents to report any additional information.

William Hruby of 1015 Tenth Avenue SE barely escaped serious injury early Saturday when a Milwaukee switch engine struck his car while crossing Milwaukee tracks at Tenth Avenue SW and Ninth Street. The collision flipped the car, brushed it off the tracks, and Hruby was uninjured with damages under 50 dollars.

Funeral services for 54 year old Charles J. Spinka of Otis road SE were held in the Polansky chapel at 2 p.m. Sunday with burial at Bohemian National cemetery. Born in Czechoslovakia June 2 1892 he came to Cedar Rapids 34 years ago and was employed by Wilson and Company. Surviving are his wife Yana two sons Charles J and Richard J three daughters Mrs Richard E White Mrs Milo Vrba and Miss Libbie Spinka a sister Mrs Mary Kohoutek and five grandchildren.
Eddie P. Brannaman, 70, long time Center Point resident, died in an Iowa City hospital Friday night. Born Lisbon January 11, 1877, he is survived by his wife Florence two sons Melvin R. of Cedar Rapids and Earl of Urbana three daughters Velma Taylor of Cedar Rapids Adeline King and Dorothy Rohn of Burbank California three brothers Ray Carl of Denver and Frank of Little Rock eleven grandchildren. Services will be in Beatty chapel with time to be announced burial in Urbana.
