Hope for A Miracle Burns Wink House in Delaware

Fire destroyed the Everett Wink home in Delaware Sunday afternoon. Parents were away when smoke issued from the stairs at 2:30 p.m. Five children, a grandson and the husband lived there. Firefighters from Delaware, Delhi, Earlville, Greeley and Manchester battled the blaze as wind fanned the flames. no injuries reported. The family had nowhere to go and little money to rent a place.

Building trades strike delays Cedar Rapids projects

In Cedar Rapids more than 1,500 tradesmen struck after a two week contract extension expired. Six unions participate with painters and sheet metal workers already under three year deals. Laborers Local 43 set up site pickets as carpenters and iron workers join the walkout.

Zambia declares state of war with Rhodesia

President Kenneth Kaunda announced Zambia is in a state of war with Rhodesia and ordered full army alert. He said any Rhodesian aircraft entering Zambian airspace would be shot on sight and cited Rhodesia's four year conflict as the backdrop for heightened cross border tensions. Mozambique and Botswana are listed as other guerrilla bases.

Oil demand could outrun supply in four to six years study says

A UPI report says an international energy study warns world oil demand may exceed supplies in four to six years if OPEC restraint continues. By 2000 shortages could reach 15 to 20 million barrels a day despite conservation and fuel shifts. The analysis also notes coal and nuclear growth, and higher oil prices, will not prevent a gap through century’s end.

Ammonia Fatality in Prairieburg Farm Services Office

Mabel Woodward, 66, of Prairieburg died Monday after inhaling ammonia fumes from a broken valve at the Farm Services office. Fireman Jim Walmutt says Mrs Woodward, wife of Farm Services manager Robert Woodward, reported the valve, then was overcome.
