Hughes sets record despite handicaps in cross country flight

Howard Hughes, the Chicago to Glendale speed pilot, revealed his eight hour forty minute flight nearly ended in disaster due to dead reckoning with no working maps or radio. He landed the Northrup aircraft at Grand Central airport after facing a headwind and an inoperative oxygen tank and oil pump, yet still set a coastward record and won a $50 bet.
