Dr. Edwin B. Frost, 68, director emeritus of the Yerkes Observatory, died at Billings Memorial Hospital after a May 6 gall stone operation. Peritonitis followed. Despite blindness for over fifteen years, he remained a leading figure in astronomy.

The Illinois House again failed to pass the 3 percent sales tax bill for the fourth time. An emergency 102 vote majority was not reached as the unofficial roll call showed 87 to 56 in favor of the tax measure, postponing action.
Inhabitants of Garhi yasing near Shikarpur were panicked as five strong earthquakes struck the area on Wednesday. Nearby authorities reported no major injuries or damages.
The supreme court Wednesday upheld Judge F H W Rice of Woodbury county naming special prosecutors to handle the ouster case against County Attorney Max Duckworth. Duckworth was refused a review of an order by Judge Rice suspending him pending a hearing May 28 on permanent removal.
DES MOINES AP reports Mrs. Sarah Ward secretary to Harold Cooper resigned from the liquor commission chair and testified before the grand jury probing testimony given to the legislative liquor committee. The commission legal adviser Leslie E. Francis was abolished and subpoenas issued. The Polk county grand jury began reviewing a 1500 page transcript from the legislative liquor committee inquiry, focusing on possible crimes in Polk County.
The Iowa liquor control commission agreed with Attorney General Edward L. O'Connor to cancel wholesale liquor permits. Nine permits issued will be eliminated following recommendations of a legislative investigating committee. The commission must pass a resolution before action becomes official, allowing affected companies time to wind down. Attending were Richard Lane Bernard Manley and W H Millhaem.
Sioux City AP The board of supervisors named M E Rawlings acting county attorney during Max Duckworth suspension. Rawlings previously was assistant county attorney under Duckworth and later counseled for Globe company a liquor wholesaler. Carlos W Goltz protested the appointment. Thomas B P Cleary declined the post.
A Iowa Supreme Court denial ends Duckworth's bid to review his suspension in a Sioux City graft case. Woodbury County officials appointed Carl Goltz and Ole Naglestad as special prosecutors, sparking contested authority and a pending certiorari appeal.
