Io wa Basic Skills Testing Program to be Discussed in Cedar Rapids
H D Hoover professor and director, will discuss how Iowa City became the center of achievement testing and the role tests should play in assessing student and school accomplishments. The free talk at Beems Auditorium, Cedar Rapids Public Library, is sponsored by the University of Iowa Alumni Association and the Linn County Iowa Club. Parents may bring children to a kids area while Hoover explains testing uses and policies.

President nominates Iowan as U S marshal
President Bush announced his intention to nominate Charles E. Beach Sr. of Des Moines to be U S marshal for the Southern District of Iowa. Beach served as a Secret Service special agent from 1973 to 1999 and worked as a contract investigator after retirement. He is an American University graduate.

Grant sought for Marion antiques mall
The Olmsteads plan a 449300 dollar grant request to the Iowa program for imminent threat relief to stabilize and rebuild the damaged Park Place Hotel Antique Mall site at 1120 Seventh Ave. Marion officials reopened the 1104 Seventh Ave portion after a February fire and seek funds to cover cleanup, stabilization, weather protections, and wall work. A public hearing on downtown urban revitalization district tax abatements is set for June 6.
