Cedar Rapids boards approves a one year extension of the instructional support levy without voter approval, arguing no tax increase. ALOT counters that any extension is a tax hike and seeks a public vote, with 1,262 signatures needed within 28 days to force an election. The levy would run through June 30, 2003, generating about 4.4 million dollars annually for kindergarten, curriculum, and technology.
The Youth Power program of The Greater Cedar Rapids Community Foundation names an eight-school board for 2001 2002 from Linn County area high schools. Planning team of 13 students chose members and created branding and the grant process. The Gerald T Knox Donor Advised Fund will fund 10000 annually for three years with a dollar for dollar Knox challenge to build a permanent endowment. The board plans community assessment fundraising and grantee site visits to shape grants and sustain the program.
