Lewellyn seeks court-appointed lawyer amid prison sentence
Des Moines AP Lewellyn, a Des Moines stockbroker facing embezzlement charges, told U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Richard Stageman he cannot afford competent counsel. He requested appointment of an attorney, with a hearing set for next Tuesday, while serving a six-month contempt term in New York. Lewellyn noted incarceration distance prevents him from interviewing counsel. He cited a prior court order allowing his former lawyers to withdraw and his 30-day window to find new representation. He has been moved from New York to Polk County Jail and then Story County Jail in Nevada, with multiple court appearances projected this month.

Corrections Director Hal Farrier said a Iowa Department of Social Services study could conclude by July 1 and a decision follow shortly after. A policy analysis favored a nursery at Mitchellville to reduce foster care costs and maintain mother child bonds, while noting security, staffing, and disciplinary risks. Earlier this year Farrier denied two inmates' requests to keep their babies.
