Waistlines shrink in Marion’s Suburban restaurant contest
In Marion, 10 regulars and staff at the Suburban Restaurant enter a three week weight loss contest with a $240 prize at stake after eight weeks. Leader Harry Tate dropped from 258 to 246 pounds though he dodged a weigh-in, while Don Kroening and Eldon McMillen each shed nine pounds. Participants admit the contest has cut profits as customers trade hearty meals for lighter options, but most say the fun and camaraderie matter most and plan to use the prize for clothes or Las Vegas trips.
