General Chairman B. Philip Bowen announced Linn County Cancer Crusade exceeded its $34,700 target with $35,430 raised. He praised 1,500 volunteers for fundraising and educational outreach, noting increased post-crusade medical checkups as early cancer defense.

Corn advanced on Thursday on commission house buying and short covering in Chicago. May wheat traded with high volatility as shorts covered, finishing mixed with prices up and down. May wheat at 2.18 1/4, May corn at 1.27 5/8, oats largely unchanged, rye steady, soybeans down about 4 1/4 cents, and lard varied between 25 points lower and 20 higher.
Chicago price notes show corn at 1 yellow, yellow sample grades, soybeans listed with top and feed values, wheat and oats not quoted. Several varieties and grades appear with $1.35 to $1.60 ranges for yellow corn and $120-135 for soybeans, reflecting market bids and quality terms.
New York stocks climbed Thursday afternoon as industrials rebounded from a rough start. Trading volume was about 2.6 million shares, below Wednesday’s 3.06 million, with most key issues gaining fraction to over a point. The Dow Jones averages were updated by the duPont company.

Two men Quentin L. Hanan 25 of Fredricksburg and Claude R. Pierce 21 of Cedar Rapids pled guilty to assault with intent to commit bodily injury. Each was sentenced to one year in the Anamosa reformatory and then paroled. They were accused of beating J. L. Nimmo 37 on a rural road in Johnson County May 6. Arrested by Cedar Rapids police and taken to Iowa City.
Dennis L Buckley a science and mathematics teacher in Spirit Lake schools earned a Fulbright to study science and chemistry and assist in English at Friedrich Alexander University Erlangen Germany for 1958 59 Buckley a January 1958 graduate of Iowa State Teachers College majored in chemistry and minored in mathematics and German.

The Governor's Citizen Committee on Mental Health Thursday urged loan-based state aid to Iowa medical students pursuing psychiatry. Loans would be canceled after four years of practice in Iowa, including one year at a state mental hospital. Four Detroit youths playing among gondola cars loaded with about 50 tons of salt were fatally suffocated after attempting to ride a salt dump from a hopper. Two companions escaped injury as the tragedy occurred Wednesday near the rail yard.
Members of local No. 234 Hoisting or Operating Engineers union returned to work after a 9 day layoff with a 17 cent per hour raise. Cedar Rapids contractors and union officials approved the pact on Wednesday and members endorsed it later. Wages now range from 2.56 to 3.32 per hour under the renewed contract.
London report states John Baldwin, 22, was discharged from the army Thursday after his fingers proved too short to grip and fire a rifle.

Des Moines reports Griff Igon 69, freed on parole from Fort Madison after sentences commuted by Gov. Loveless last year. Igon, sentenced 1941 from Plymouth county for first degree murder, was 55 when accused of killing Bessie Stauffer in 1941.
West Union petitions circulate this weekend urging merger of Alpha consolidated school district with North Fayette County Community district. Action follows two years of discussions among boards. Alpha high students attend North High since last fall with no attendance changes. Alpha would keep its building for K-8. new music and physical education programs added. Districts proposed and district voting rules outlined. Alpha enrollment 77 K-8, 18 Alpha students in high school locally. Alpha board members named: Art Niewoehner president, Dave VandeBerg, Ralph Pleggenkuhle, Raymond Hoeger, R. M. Richards.

Mrs Henry Joens 73 died Thursday of multiple sclerosis. Services Saturday at 2 span at the State's funeral home with burial in Dysart cemetery. Born November 6 1884 near Clutier she married Henry Joens and they farmed near Traer. Survivors include daughter Mrs Robert Zila Cedar Rapids and three sons Ted Traer Eldon Gilman and Ervin Tama.
