Mild winter fish kill in Iowa judged moderate by officials

Iowa’s winter fish kill, once expected to be the most massive in years, was deemed mild by the Iowa Conservation Commission. Jim Mahew attributes the mild impact to early spring and minimal snow cover, with many lakes and streams already yielding strong spring catches. Stocking continues at four lakes and several streams that suffered heavy losses, including Silver Lake and Hartwick Lake, and stretches of the Des Moines, Wapsipinicon, and Raccoon rivers.
