Heavy fighting across Vietnam continued with allied sources estimating 2000 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong killed over three days. Reports show more than 100 U.S. troops killed and several hundred wounded since Sunday night. South Vietnamese casualties were around 300 dead and 792 wounded with 29 missing.
Heavy fog blamed for two traffic deaths in Jones county early Wednesday. Thomas Harderson, 77, of Anamosa, and Joseph M. Vickers, 26, of Martelle, were killed in separate crashes. Harderson’s car hit a stop sign and collided with a semi on a gravel road near highways 151 and 1. Vickers’ car collided with a Hubbard Milling truck at Martelle’s edge while entering Highway 1 from a county road. Police, sheriff and Anamosa officials investigated. bodies taken to Goettsch funeral home.
Roy Fuchs, a branch bank manager, told police four men abducted his wife and three children in Bethpage. They demanded $100,000 from the bank, directing him to retrieve the money and leave it in a vacant lot. He later found his family unharmed at home.

Williams was convicted May 6 by a jury, and the case notes reference the Christmas Eve kidnapping in Des Moines.
Charles Evers heads Mississippi's first all black town government since Reconstruction in Fayette. he vows to curb violence and ban carry of guns or knives over two inches. He and five black councilmen win July 7 inauguration after defeating longtime white mayor R J Allen. Evers plans advisory board of blacks and whites, seeks unity, and anticipates white flight but urges cooperation.
A leading Republican urged an informal House Judiciary Committee inquiry to decide if impeachment proceedings against Supreme Court Justice Abe Fortas are warranted. Senate leaders and Mitchell were pressed for information as Fortas faced mounting pressure to resign amid calls from Byrd Kennedy and others.
A man and two young passengers ride in a car that veered off the road and sank in a deep irrigation canal in Oregon. Jack Wallace remained wedged under the dash for an hour and 45 minutes, breathing from a trapped air bubble until rescuers pulled the vehicle free. Ken Shoop freed passenger Faye Lepper while Wallace faded but survived.
Federal warrants target Edward L. Dull and Marie Calvert for interstate ransom demand in the abduction of 22 year old Anne Jenkins from Waterloo Iowa to Baltimore Maryland. Jenkins was held three days and released after her father paid $10,000.
The Iowa Highway Commission plans a county road south of McGregor as a signed summer access to McGregor while highway 18 west of town is rebuilt. The route would not be an official detour but a signed alternative, pending Clayton county supervisors approval. The Postville detour remains official during construction, which starts in July and lasts about 113 days with relocation work on highway 18.
