The U S trade deficit fell for a second straight month to 62 billion in March 2004, the smallest in seven months, as exports rose and U S oil bills declined. February deficit was 65.6 billion. January 68.6 billion.
Gannett Inc plans to acquire Planet Discover Inc, a Cedar Rapids based online search and ads firm co founded by Terry and Todd Millard. Terms not disclosed. Planet Discover lists offices in Covington Kentucky and Cedar Rapids with 28 staff and serves clients including the Denver Post and Sacramento Bee. The Millards will stay with the company and future employment numbers were not released.
GM plans to stop making the Hummer H1 after the 2006 model year. H1, based on the military Humvee, will be last of the line as GM shifts focus to broader appealing H2 and H3 models. H1's gas mileage about 10 mpg and buyers less sensitive to fuel costs. Analyst says move aligns with bringing Hummer to mainstream drivers.
Corn futures rose as the government forecast ending corn stocks at 1.14 billion bushels for 2006-07, a 49 percent drop from a year ago, with ethanol use up 34 percent to 2.15 billion bushels. Analysts say demand from ethanol and soy diesel fuels is driving the rally. The USDA projects 2006-07 corn at 10.55 billion bushels with a price range of 2.25 to 2.65. Soybeans also gain on rising demand and higher stocks, with prices climbing toward July 2007 levels.
