House and Senate clash over federal budget and education act
The House approved the GOP drafted budget 221 to 207 to cut taxes and fund a Medicare drug benefit while pledging no funding for national missile defense. The Senate passed a fiscal 2002 2011 budget 53 to 47 projecting 2.17 trillion revenue and 1.95 trillion spending with a 227 billion surplus and warned of entitlements growth. The House and Senate also debated renewing the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act with testing goals and Title 1 funding, and considered a 100 million annual technology training centers program.
