Democrats Front Education Focus in Iowa Senate Primary
In District 49, political newcomer Merlin Ackerson faces veteran Mark Shearer in the Democratic primary with June 2 as the nominating date. Both candidates cite education as the key issue while outlining plans for early childhood education smaller class sizes and school building repairs. Ackerson, 65, is a retired minister from Keokuk and Shearer, 45, a Washington cellular consultant and former state representative. The winner will oppose Republican Richard Garrell of Mount Pleasant in the general election.
