House panel backs measure to speed Rock Island sale

The House Energy and Commerce Committee approved a Rail Service and Improvement Act amendment to speed the sale of the bankrupt Rock Island Railroad. It would let the ICC arbitrate between trustees and buyers and give former employees hiring preference. Rep. Tom Tauke said lines deteriorate without use and many workers remain jobless after years of bankruptcy. He noted grain elevators and farmers lose service as a result. The Senate passed a similar provision in March, and the full House is expected to act soon.
