A three year Paris talks casualty tally shows 22,170 American combat deaths as of midnight last Saturday. Last week added 34 combat deaths and 221 wounded, the lowest weekly totals in months. non hostile deaths stood at four.
Iowa City saw an abrupt change as highway patrol and University officials sealed dorm entrances to curb violence. Rooftops storing missiles were cleared and patrols patrolled campus while ROTC events loomed as possible flashpoints. Governor Ray defended rapid action and praised officers for restraint amid student protests.
South Vietnamese forces repulsed two large North Vietnamese assaults in the A Shau Valley campaign. About 200 NVA were reported killed with U.S. air support, while 90 Marines were killed or wounded. A base camp and arms factory were destroyed. The action followed an earlier month of fighting and included B 52s fighter bombers and helicopter gun ships support. The day also saw the Geneva disarmament conference end its spring session and recess to June 29.
Sen. Proxmire attacks the proposed $250 million federal loan guarantees for Lockheed Aircraft Corp as bad economics and bad policy. He questions White House support and argues a bankruptcy would mostly spare jobs, noting ongoing defense work and overdue management changes.
Senate Republican Leader Hugh Scott says President Nixon would veto a bill to extend the draft if it includes a provision to cut U S troops in Europe. He argues reductions would derail arms talks and block negotiated mutual force reductions with the Soviet Union.

Hamlet and Dillard serve in Vietnam while Cartwright is at the Pentagon.
UPI reports Soviet fishing vessels harassed American lobster boats off New England. The Wily Fox from New Bedford said 20 Russian boats formed across 19 lines, seized traps and gear, then tarped equipment. Coast Guard resources are limited as incidents rise and risk to lives grows.
Wisconsin Atty. Gen. Robert Warren announced 31 people were arrested on 47 drug trafficking counts in a multi-state network reaching into Colorado Minnesota Iowa California LaCrosse Madison Milwaukee and Vernon County. Investigations traced marijuana to Mexico and some heroin to Vietnam with drugs valued above $10,000. The seizures included marijuana cocaine heroin amphetamines barbiturates and hallucinogens.
