The Surtax and Its Effect on You in 1968

Analysis shows a 7 percent surtax on the tax you owe for 1968, retroactive to April 1. For a couple with $8,000 income after deductions the increase is about $103.50 for the year, roughly $2 a week. at $16,000 it rises to $244.50 annually, about $4.70 weekly. at $44,000 the tax hike can reach $1,054.50, over $20 a week. The surtax aims to curb inflation, signal fiscal responsibility to foreign creditors, and temper interest rates, with exemptions for many married filers under $3,000. The overall effect is a modest burden for most, but higher earners face larger increases.
