Municipal Judge Howard McLaughlin placed Arno K Grabe of Shellsburg on a 30 day suspended sentence after he pled guilty to passing a faulty $10 check March 18 at a Cedar Rapids supermarket for the charge of false uttering.
The Apollo command module descended by parachute and landed in the desert about five miles from the launch site after one of three 88 foot diameter ring para chutes failed to stay attached after opening at 7500 feet. Hal Benjamin Kerr, 64, of 500 Fifth Avenue SE, was struck by a car at Third Avenue and Fourth Street at 3 15 a m Wednesday. He suffered a broken right leg and head cuts and was listed in good condition at Mercy Hospital noon Wednesday. Ronald G Sult of 37514 Fifteenth Street SE drove the car and faced charges of failure to yield to a pedestrian after Kerr, in a crosswalk, was hit.
Des Moines AP reports John Deere plant employees led a noon Tuesday strike at the Des Moines Works in the cotton picker assembly area. Management and UAW Local 450 say the walkout was unauthorized. over 300 workers refused to cross picket lines as 90 strikers halted the shift ending at 4 30 PM. The facility employs about 2,500.
The X-15 rocket plane registered an 800 degree skin temperature during a test at Edwards Air Force Base California. The experiment focused on air friction challenges for the new SB.70 bomber program.
City council approved a summer plan detailing first year oiling of dust prone streets and a two year seamanizing effort to create a more permanent surface. The lists cover many blocks including Eighteenth Street NE, Twenty first Street SE, Edgewood Road NW, and multiple SW avenues. The program also includes a second year set with avenues and streets in SE NW and SW neighborhoods and a nine block first year subset in key corridors.
Ludvik Petrak 86 a lifelong Cedar Rapids area resident died Tuesday after a long illness. Born November 27 1877 in Fairfax township he married Julia Cerveny November 22 1904 in Cedar Rapids. He was known in the Midwest for dairy cattle work. Survived by wife Julia a daughter Jordan L. and three other daughters and many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Services Friday 2 p.m. Brush chapel officiated by Rev Paul Clark with burial at Czech National Cemetery. Friends may call Thursday.
Augustine Cruz Perez 61 of 1208 Fifteenth Street SE died Tuesday after a sudden illness. A 36 year employee of the Illinois Central railroad, he was born May 3 1903 in Irapuato Mexico and married Josephine Castello in 1918. Survived by a daughter Alexa Zinnecker and five sons, 20 grandchildren, a sister in Iowa City and a brother in Irapuato. Service Friday at 10 30 a.m. at Kuba funeral home with burial at St. John’s. Rosary Thursday at 7 30 p.m. at the funeral home.
Louis Vosmek of 1612 Fifth Street NW Cedar Rapids died Tuesday in an Iowa City hospital after a long illness. A WWI veteran, he belonged to Hanford post American Legion. Born Sept 24 1896 he married Elsie Henderson Oct 15 1925 in Iowa City. Survived by wife six daughters one son a sister 11 grandchildren and one great grandchild all of Cedar Rapids. Funeral Friday at 1 30 in Turner chapel with burial at Czech National Friends may call at the chapel.
Anna Simitz 92 a former Cedar Rapids resident died Tuesday in Peoria. She was born July 7 1871 in Johnson County. Surviving are a daughter Mrs Joe Zelenda of Peoria and two sons George and another son living in Cedar Rapids.

Two auto accident damage suits stemming from a 1961 crash on highway 39 near Wheatland were dismissed with prejudice after an out of court settlement. Plaintiffs S. J. Phillips and Learleen Phillips of Perris California sought 150000 total from Clara Thomas of Nashua. The Cedar Rapids ceremony noted by Judge Edward J. McManus features Mayor Bob Johnson as speaker for naturalization day with about 30 citizens to receive transcripts.

Hamilton Basso, 59, novelist and New Orleans native, died after a long illness in New Haven. He authored The View from Pompey’s Head and The Light Infantry Ball and had made his home in Connecticut.
