Death Wish Is Fulfilled For a Racer
The Mille Miglia near Brescia, Italy, claimed ten lives when Alfonso de Portago's Ferrari blew a tire and crashed into spectators. His co driver Eddie Nelson also died, marking the 13th fatality of the event, with Butch Goefigens dying later near Florence. The tragedy renews debate over open road racing safety and hints at the event's demise after decades as Europe’s premier long road race.
