Rome. Premier Bettino Craxi faces a critical local vote as his centrist coalition battles the Communist Party. About 70,000 candidates run across 15 regions and 6,562 communities amid predicted voter apathy and potential record absenteeism among Italy’s 44.4 million eligible voters. The results, though not affecting Parliament, are seen as a barometer for Craxi’s alliance of Socialists, Christian Democrats, Social Democrats, Republicans and Liberals. A defeat could threaten the coalition’s future, especially after the 56 percent share won in 1983.
