Craig Byam of 322 Eleventh Street SW had a possession of amphetamine charge dismissed. Rande Long of Keokuk pled guilty to drunk driving and received a 180 day suspended jail sentence after arrest on March 22.
Thomas Allen Pettit a 21 year old was arrested Saturday and charged with an armed robbery of the Blue Cloud Lounge on Des Moines north side Friday. Pettit identified as shotgun wielding bandit by Des Moines police. He is serving two concurrent 20 year sentences for breaking and entering. A 22 year old Des Moines woman was arrested and Tyrone Holmes 31 of Fort Madison is being sought.
Cedar Rapids firemen continue investigation into the cause of a blaze that destroyed a 1967 automobile parked at the Cynthia Cole residence 826 Fifth street SE. The vehicle registered to Theresa M. Beltran of Waterloo was found burning at 3 12 a.m.
Johnny D. Lee White denied murdering Donald Van Steenis from the witness stand as the defense prepared to call an alleged suspect, James Maurer, amid details of White’s activities around the Cedar Rapids area near the February 12 1974 shooting. The defense argued Maurer may have been near the scene while prosecutors rely on witness identification and weapon matching to connect White to the crime.
Cedar Rapids airport commission decided to hire one safety officer in the proposed 13 person force and seek a declaratory judgment on civil service and pension. The plan aims to cut costs by moving fire and police duties to the airport, with IPERS pension and a potential $100,000 yearly saving. Jameson plans a $10,069 salary and a hiring deadline in a week or two.
Kevin C. McNelley an 18 year old Cedar Rapids man pled guilty in Linn district court to robbery. He was linked to a December 10 holdup of the Casino tavern at 726 First Street SW Sentencing was scheduled for July 22 and he remains free on bond. ON THIS DATE in 1974 Italians voted to keep a divorce law after five years separation.
In Cedar Rapids federal court, 15 Dubuque area tax resisters petitioned Judge Edward J. McManus withdraw citing bias. They face charges of filing false tax forms to avoid withholdings. a separate multi million civil suit accuses McManus and others of civil rights violations over licensing for attorneys. McManus denied the bid, noting disbarment of the proposed former Minnesota counsel.
