Farmers gain footing as April rains ease planting pressure
Iowa farmers move past jitters about corn planting with warmer May outlook. ISU extension agronomist Mark Licht says many are comfortable with current progress after a cool wet April, which was the 12th wettest in 142 years and kept fields largely undisturbed. State climatologist Harry Hillaker notes April’s rainfall, Cedar Rapids and Iowa City totals, and compares to last April’s record moisture. Franck and Bowman discuss improved planter size, no till and strip till practices, expected daily planting acreages, and how residue aids moisture and soil warmth.
