A year after Iowa closed its last state liquor stores, private shops report weak sales. Richard Morrell, administrator of the alcoholic beverages division, notes April gains but overall fiscal-year figures lag last year. Through April, gallons sold fall 7 percent year over year while dollar sales trail by about 811,000 dollars. Morrell cites national trends as a factor and doubts the private market will reach the earlier projected 584 million dollars for the year.
A dramatic blaze destroyed the Gay Locker Co building at 1421 Waterfront Dr Iowa City. About 500 residents were evacuated within a 12 block area as firefighters from 12 departments battled the fire, fearing an ammonia tank could explode and toxic fumes. The fire began around 6 50 p m and by midnight smoke and flames persisted while crews worked to bring it under control.
The NTSB concluded that two Northwest pilots failed to follow preflight checklists and misset flaps and slats, causing Detroit airport crash that killed 186. Only 4-year-old Cecelia Cichan survived. The report cites cockpit discipline and questions about aural warnings, with union and manufacturer responses amid disputed MC-80 flap system issues.
Michael Dukakis scored landslide nominations in Nebraska and West Virginia defeating Jesse Jackson. Dukakis led Nebraska with 65 percent to 25 percent, winning 18 delegates to 7 for Jackson, and held a strong 79 percent over Jackson in West Virginia with 60 percent counted. Bush won West Virginia Republican primary with 89 percent as Dole took 21 percent in Nebraska.
Lech Walesa leads about 1000 workers from the Lenin shipyard in Gdansk after an eight day strike. The crowd marched to a church, with police allowing the procession and townspeople applauding. Walesa vowed to stay until settlement and declared it a new spring for Solidarity.
