Deferred Sentence Bill Sent to Senate
Iowa lawmakers sent a heavily amended bill to the Senate that would authorize deferred sentences for some crimes while barring use in murder, treason, rape of a child under 12, kidnapping for ransom, and other violent felonies. Supporters said it helps rehabilitation, but opponents warned amendments protect society from easing punishments.
