University of Illinois animal nutritionist Dr. Joseph Kastelic told the International Symposium on Food Protection that banning certain growth stimulating drugs in livestock rations does not solve health risks. He urged long term animal and human trials to reveal basic mechanisms and recommended exposing researchers to human volunteers before determining safety. He noted antibiotics in feed have not shown residue problems and that stilbestrol residues are often undetectable, with testing capable of finding one part per billion.
