Cedar Rapids Raiders beat Bloomington 4-3 at Hill Park in a dramatic ninth inning. Bink and Blazo opened scoring early, while Roggino tied and Walls error sealed the win for Cedar Rapids in a tense home opener.
In a San Francisco church basement Amos Alonzo Stagg, age 76, is to receive a gold football trophy proclaiming him world champion coach. The veteran mentor began coaching at Springfield in 1890, spent 41 years at Chicago, and has led Stanford University since 1933, remaining active amid retirement pressures.

Speeder Machinery stormed to a late rally as Standard Bakery edged them 6–5 in Industrial B. Chocolate Cream Coffee lost 7–6 to Honeymead. Briardale Stores and French Stamats were tied 8–8 at darkness. Industrial C saw Honeymead win 7–6 over Chocolate Cream Coffee, Paperline 8–6 over Pranch-Stamats, and Standard Bakery 6–1 over Speeder Machinery.
AMES AP Bob Simpson former Iowa State track coach heads to Budapest to coach the Hungarian team after a career as a Missouri star and Cyclone mentor. He departs Ames by train Thursday and will travel via New York and Bremen before continuing to Budapest.
Arnovich and Brack drive runs as Philadelphia edges St Louis 4 to 3 in a nine inning game. Warneke earns the win for the Cubs with 7 hits allowed in 8 2 3 innings. Hutchinson closes for the Dodgers in a separate line.
Sewell hits a home run and drives in two runs as Pittsburgh defeats New York 5 to 0. Gumbert struggles through eight innings allowing six hits while Vandenberg finishes for the Giants. Bonura Handley Ott contribute in the field as Berres and Waner collect key hits.
In a late inning effort, Detroit and Washington contested a game with errors from Gehringer and Wasdell, multiple RBIs by Wasdell Greenberg and McCosky, Fox Homers, and Krakauskas taking the loss after 7 innings despite 12 hits. Moline Evansville pitchers struck for fifteen hits led by Claude Wilburn with four hits and five RBIs. Joe Callahan worked five hits allowed to yield a 11 run Bees win over the Plows with unearned runs in both Plow runs. Evansville took the series opener 11 to 2.
