Violent chase ends with suspect dead after city rally

Donald Watson watched a woman pound his door as Paul Draper of Anamosa fired several shots and fled toward Matsell Park. A state trooper was injured at a roadblock and Draper died in a Linn County pursuit after colliding with a patrol car and shooting himself. The injured trooper, Cory Keeney, 27, was in satisfactory condition.

Cedar Rapids buys GPS units for 70 squad cars

The Cedar Rapids police department purchases 70 global positioning system mobile units costing 51 240 dollars to track the location of patrol cars within 10 to 15 feet. Dispatchers can identify the closest unit to a call and officers in trouble can be located even without radio acks. The move also upgrades in car computers and enables a moving map display at the dispatch center.

Iowa regents weigh allowing student teachers in parochial schools

Iowa's three state universities may lift limits on student teachers in private religious schools. The Board of Regents will vote in Council Bluffs on a policy allowing placement only in accredited parochial schools for secular subjects.
