Students Learn Policing Through Rides with Marion Officers

Marion police and Linn-Mar high school government students participate in a thrice weekly program to ride in a squad car with an officer. Seventeen boys, from sophomore to senior year, report improved views of police work and several consider law enforcement careers after the experience.

Northwest Iowa student council con vention set at Upper Iowa college

Teen delegates from 45 northeastern Iowa high schools will attend the North weast Iowa District Student Council Convention at Upper Iowa College. About 5000 students are represented by the participants led by Sam Want, advisor at Oelwein High School. The gathering will cover election of officers for 1970 71 and discuss workshop topics like dress codes and student council influence while featuring Evan Holtman as keynote speaker and Iowa Republican gubernatorial candidate.

About 107 seniors are expected to graduate at 2 p.m. in Dorman Memorial Gymnasium. Kirkpatrick, a Chicago Tribune vice president and editor, has held roles from neighborhood reporter to managing editor.

Strawberry Day Plans Discussed

STRAWBERRY POINT The chamber of commerce outlined plans for Strawberry Day on June 20 at the Franklin hotel party room. Rides for children include a trackless train a flying boat and a kiddy bar ride. The Waterloo Shrine motorcycle group will join the parade and performances. IOWA CITY Awards were given at the Fourth Estate banquet by the University of Iowa school of journalism. Gary Wade Cedar Rapids received the 190 WMT scholarship while George Everett Iowa City won the Wilber Peterson award.

Veishea scholarships honor two Iowa students

Ames Dick Carlson of Cedar Rapids won a $750 scholarship and Randy Kehrli of Manchester received a $375 award at the Veishea scholarships banquet at Iowa State University on Thursday.
