MidAmerican Energy Wind Expansion Aims to Cut Rates and Grow Iowa
MidAmerican Energy plans a wind expansion in Iowa with over 360 million dollars in additional property tax revenue expected over 30 years and 3.2 million dollars per year in landowner payments. The project is to be built at no net cost to customers and reduce rates by 10 million dollars annually by 2017, starting with 3.3 million in 2015. It aims to supply 39 percent of Iowa retail generation from wind and boost local wind component manufacturing. Although turbines may use Siemens and GE parts, the expansion will not preclude pursuing a small nuclear reactor elsewhere in Iowa.
