Former Iowa City resident, sought in a May 1999 choking incident that hospitalized a man, returned from California where he was detained on a Johnson County arrest warrant. He pleaded not guilty to attempted murder, remains in Johnson County Jail on $50,000 bond, with trial set for June 12.
Newton based Iowa Telecom plans to acquire 525000 customers in 300 Iowa communities from GTE for just under 1 billion dollars. The deal, expected to close June 30, will make Iowa Telecom the second largest local provider in Iowa and 14th in the nation, adding dial up Internet and later high speed service nationwide.
The service area includes Belle Plaine Central City Dyersville Fayette Manchester Marengo Oxford Junction Lisbon London Solon Tipton Washington and Williamsburg.
Willie Nelson, 67, headlines a near two hour concert to 800 fans at the Meskwaki Bingo-Casino Hotel backed by a seven piece band led by his sister Bonnie. The mostly acoustic set featured medleys from Ain't It Funny to Night Life with highlights from On the Road Again and You Were Always on My Mind. Nelson’s enduring guitar work and relaxed stage banter kept the crowd engaged despite a chatty bingo hall atmosphere.
Shawn M. Weese, 31, remains jailed in Johnson County on a 252000 cash bond after an April 19 arrest in a San Francisco police station. An alleged accomplice, Wesley Todd Moore, 33, is also named in the complaint alleging strangulation and assault at an Iowa City bar, with Moore later arrested in Coralville.
Louise M. Peiffer, 58, of Keota died from injuries after her westbound car collided with an eastbound tractor on 180th Street near Wellman at 5:15 p.m. Stephen Adam, 37, of Wellman, the tractor driver, was uninjured. Wellman lies about 20 miles southwest of Iowa City.
