Rural affairs writer Marlene Lucas reports a wet week with more rain likely through Wednesday. Only 10 percent of the crop is planted, far below the normal 47 percent for this date, and 85 percent of corn was planted by May 8, 1994, a poor showing compared to recent years. Farmers describe cold soils, low temperatures, and slow germination raising concerns about rotting seeds and delayed planting across counties including West Branch and Cedar Rapids.
