Bing Crosby flatly denied reports of a family rift after a letter from his wife said everything was fine. He blamed a lawyer for circulating the strained relations story and noted he will depart for London next week to play in the British amateur golf championship.
Virginia MacPherson reports from Hollywood that Bing Crosby and wife Dixie are in a family dispute. Crosby says no settlement papers yet and a possible legal separation if court action occurs, noting Bing is Catholic and Dixie is not. Larry Crosby downplays the feud as routine and hopes for an amicable outcome.
The Scottish Highlanders of the University of Iowa will headline the free Friday night event at the Cedar Rapids Open House, joined by specialty acts and a milking contest. Clyde Parker wins 1949 milking contest as Open House weekend continues with the fifth annual Eastern Iowa Band Festival climaxing at Hawkeye Downs. Bill Lawrence headlines the night concert and Miss Eastern Iowa is crowned. Sunday features Open House in Cedar Rapids churches and homes, plus a Cedar Rapids Des Moines Ball game with Johnnie Jones and Dairy Empress winner announced. Ticket sales are available at W and L Lounge Becks Athletic Goods Hart s Loop Service and the Chamber of Commerce.
Philadelphia AP The AFL says it is willing to meet with CIO leaders to draft a permanent merger. President William Green insists unity be organic, not tentative, in a letter to CIO President Philip Murray. Green notes the council doubts the proposed method but remains open to pursuing unity.
Dr Walter R. Goetsch 38 dean of student affairs at the University of Iowa was killed Monday in a collision involving his car and a truck. Funeral services are scheduled for Wednesday afternoon as his parents from Wausau Wisconsin arrived to make arrangements. University President Virgil M Hancher praised him for unwavering work toward student welfare and said the university family has suffered a great loss.
A federal court trial before Judge Henry N. Graven concerns Master Liquid Hog Medicine by Master Laboratories of Omaha. The government claims the product fails to cure necro and the labels mislead buyers, while the defense argues the remedy is beneficial and not a cure-all. The case, tied to interstate shipments from Omaha to Steam Boat Rock, could affect further sales if the government prevails.
Louis Ward Booth, 22, of Highland Kaw, was sentenced to three years in a federal penitentiary for violating the Dyer act after pleading guilty to stealing a car on April 4 in Demopolis Alabama and driving it to Tama Iowa. A Waterloo man, charged with obtaining veterans compensation falsely, was placed on probation.
James J. Allen, 27, of Waterloo pled guilty to obtaining veteran's compensation through false claims. Judge Graven placed him on probation with restitution of 78 dollars. The acting prosecutor was William B. Danforth, assistant U.S. attorney.
Rep. Young suggested a U S warship may have engaged a strange submarine and sunk it with depth bombs in coastal waters. A navy spokesman said investigations found no confirmation of a submarine present in any case and declined further comment.
