June Draft Call Sets Mean 500 Plus Marines in Iowa
Iowa selective service headquarters announced slightly over five hundred men will be drafted in June. An earlier projection of about eight hundred was lowered after officials reassessed enrollments. The update follows Monday briefings in Des Moines.

Prison escapee captured in Arizona after photo reveal
Milton E. Whiteside, an Iowa Fort Madison escapee, was recognized by a Phoenix FBI clerk while mailing wanted men photos. The clerk identified him as Carl Wade, a Prescott stock car racer, and Whiteside admitted his identity after arrest in Prescott. Whiteside had a 1945 robbery with aggravation sentence.

State lakes operators will pay charges under a new scale set Monday by the Iowa Conservation Commission. The commercial motor boat schedule levies 2 percent on the first 5 000 dollars, 5 percent on the next 5 000 dollars, and 7 percent on the third 5 000 dollars.

Average Iowans Live Longer Than Most States
Des Moines AP reports Iowans have high life expectancy, ranking second to Vermont in residents over 65. The study by Dr Willard Brinegar and Dr Raphael Ginzberg notes newborn Iowa boys live to nearly 66, girls to nearly 70, and 40 year olds have about 32 to 35 more years. Life expectancy in Iowa tops national averages by about three years.
