HACAP faces funding gap for Operation Backpack in seven-county area
Hawkeye Area Community Action Program says its Operation Backpack program which delivers weekend meals to children in 24 Linn County schools and 14 Johnson County schools may not continue in the coming school year due to insufficient funds. CEO Jane Drapeaux notes that one in four children in those counties relies on school meals. The program depends on volunteers and private funds and costs about 10 000 to 12 000 dollars per classroom.
