Senate Cloture Fails On Criminal Code Reform Vote
In the week of April 26, the Senate failed to invoke cloture on the criminal code reform bill by 45 to 46. The bill would redefine offenses and overhaul sentencing, with germane amendments contested and debates over death penalty obscenity abortion and school prayer. The Reagan administration backed the measure, but opponents argued for more time or broader carveouts. The bill was withdrawn from the floor.
