Staten Island Ferry Collides With Freighter in Dense Fog
A crowded Staten Island ferry named American Legion hit the 515 foot freighter Hough Orchid off the Statue of Liberty in thick fog at 7 20 am injuring at least 62 passengers. Eight were hospitalized on Staten Island and four were seriously hurt including a heart seizure and a fractured thigh. A tugboat towed the ferry to St George terminal while the freighter stayed in Upper New York Bay.

Frank Fitzsimmons, 73, longtime president of the Teamsters Union, died in La Jolla California after a prolonged battle with lung cancer.
