Deputy Probation Officer Appointed in Linn County

HARON LOU LEWIS, 22, a University of Iowa student from Burlington, sworn in by Judge Howard McLaughlin as deputy Linn County probation officer. She will work half days until July when she starts full time, succeeding Gertrude Benecke who retired Jan. 1. A study by Walter A. Lunden shows 1940 county home patients were 58.88 percent paupers and 41.12 percent mental patients, while recent counts show 57.74 percent mental patients and 42.26 percent paupers as social security and old age aid reduce pauper stays and mental illness treatment expands. County board cites state policy shifts since 1954 sending back hospital patients to counties for custodial care. Building experts deem county home structurally sound but urge extensive remodeling after reassessing patient type and needs.
