Canadians join campaign against al-Qaida and Taliban
Waves of Chinook helicopters carried several hundred Canadian troops from Bagram for a new eastern Afghanistan operation under Mountain Lion. U.S. forces and Afghan troops disarmed a village harboring al-Qaida supporters in the south while a British-led force swept the southeast, seizing 2000 rounds in a cave. Torii and Snipe operations, under Canadian and British command, back U.S. air support as Col. John Collin reports no battlefield casualties aside from one Canadian evacuee. Operation Torii aims to gather intelligence on al-Qaida, possibly spanning two days to weeks.
