Pope apologizes to Orthodox in Greece plea for unity
Pope John Paul II in Athens issued a sweeping apology for sins of action and omission by Catholics against Orthodox Christians including the 1204 sacking of Constantinople. Orthodox leaders called the move bold though work remains to bridge centuries of division. A joint declaration condemned violence and proselytism as Greek Orthodox leader Christodoulos and the pope signed the document at Areopagus. More than 5,000 police secured the area amid cautious optimism for reconciliation.
