Monster razed at Skrunda radar base in Latvia after 50 years
Americans demolished the 230 foot radar tower at Skrunda Latvia in seconds to end a symbol of Soviet occupation. Washington funded most of the 7 million dollar project as crowds cheered, TV viewers watched, and President Ulmanis spoke of hope. Russia will still operate older facilities until 1998 before full dismantling.
