Tito died Sunday in Ljubljana after a long illness. The government declared seven days of mourning as Tito’s body traveled by train to Belgrade where it will lie in state in the Federal Parliament building before Thursday’s funeral. He led Yugoslavia for decades and maintained unity through a system of collective leadership amid growing nationalist tensions.
Des Moines AP report recalls Tito’s brief November 2 1971 visit to Iowa. His plane landed at Des Moines Municipal Airport then departed for a Soviet built aircraft. Gov. Robert Ray and onlookers noted the stop was rushed due to schedule delays and runway issues in Los Angeles.
The eight U.S. servicemen killed in the failed Iran hostage rescue are given to Archbishop Hilarion Capudji to fly to Switzerland for transfer to the United States. Iran claims four helicopters violated airspace. Washington denies the incident. Capudji plans to hand the remains to the International Red Cross in Switzerland. Vatican authorization remains unclear.
