The Labor Department reported April unemployment at 6.0 percent the first time in 32 years as 535000 new jobs brought total employed to 93.8 million. Adult men fell to 4.2 percent while adult women stayed at 5.8 percent and black teenage unemployment eased to 11.8 percent.
Iowa Attorney General reviews Department of Social Services procedures after the Linn County death of 10 month old Coggan infant Edwin Tietz. Assistant AG Steve Robinson says procedures may not be faulty and notes follow up with the five member Council on Social Services. Robert Elmore is charged with murder and is under psychiatric testing at Oakdale. Robinson will meet Judge Brent Harstad in two weeks regarding an April 20 order naming the baby's older brother a child in need of assistance.
A Florida tornado struck High Point Elementary in Clearwater killing two kindergarten boys aged five and six who were celebrating a birthday. Ninety four students were injured and rushed to hospitals as classrooms and walls collapsed, with teachers and students describing the terrifying destruction and rescue effort.
